The science in 2020 supporting plant-based nutrition has been overwhelming. Sadly, the global community have not taken enough action to change our broken food system. It was a tough job, but here are my top evidence-based papers.

This week, Doctors for Nutrition from Australia took the opportunity of hosting an Independent UN Food Summit dialogue, bringing together key stakeholders to discuss the diet and food system in Australia and how the National Dietary Guidelines (NDGs), which are currently under review, are an important lever for change. I was honoured to give one of the keynote speeches but only had 6 minutes to highlight some important messages! Below I summarise my key points and refer to some important papers and reports on the topic of diet, health and sustainability.


This week has a cancer theme as I am preparing for my talk for the International Conference on Nutrition in Medicine. I summarise the main headline messages from my talk.

At least 40% OF CANCER CASES COULD BE PREVENTED BY ADOPTING A HEALTHY DIET AND LIFESTYLE

Cancer prevention recommendations are done in my view. I doubt the advice will change in the coming 5–10 years. I believe the evidence supporting these recommendations will only be strengthened by a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms involved. The recommendations are summarised in an excellent guideline from the American Cancer Society and highlights are shown in the table below.
